WhatRoute is based on the algorithms used by the UNIX traceroute command.
 
Quoting from the UNIX manual page:

"Implemented by Van Jacobson from a suggestion by Steve Deering.
Debugged by a cast of thousands with particularly cogent suggestions
or fixes from C. Philip Wood, Tim Seaver, and Ken Adelman"

I haven't put all your ideas in but they are not forgotten.

Please note - WhatRoute only runs with Open Transport. I have no
plans (in fact I wouldn't know where to start) to make it run
with MacTCP.
